Amman and the North
Amman is Jordan’s capital, a bustling, vibrant mix of ancient and modern with much to offer the visitor in terms of history, culture, architecture, shopping and eating. Climb the old Citadel to enjoy its combination of picturesque ruins and splendid views of the city. Stop by at the Roman Amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the Middle East, and visit the King Abdullah Mosque to appreciate its beautiful Islamic architecture. A short drive to the north lies Jerash with its magnificent collection of ancient ruins – be sure to visit the Temples of Zeus and Artemis, the Agora and the Hippodrome, and enjoy the Roman Army and Chariot re-enactments.
The Dead Sea Region
The Dead Sea is truly a special place – part of the Rift Valley that stretches from Africa, it is the lowest point on the Earth’s surface and a salt-saturated lake that provides bathers with a unique bathing and spa experience. Sweimeh is a resort region on the north-east coast with a wide choice of luxury hotels and a state of the art conference centre. Mount Nebo is a short drive away – the peak where Moses is believed to have looked down on the Land of Milk and Honey, and which gives visitors a spectacular panoramic view of the Dead Sea region. The Orthodox Church of St George in Madaba is home to a magnificent floor mosaic map depicting the Jordan Valley and its surroundings in vivid detail.
The Palestinian West Bank
Cross the Jordan Valley to the Palestinian West Bank to visit the site where Jesus is believed to have been baptised by John the Baptist. Visit Jericho, one of the oldest cities in the world, to visit such attractions as the Monastery of Saint Gerassimos, Hisham’s Palace and Tel es-Sultan. The Caves of Qumran are the home of the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered by chance by a Bedouin boy in the 1940s, and offer visitors a clambering tour of the surrounding cliffs. And south, on the edge of the stark Negev Desert, stands the clifftop fortress of Masada, where in the First Century a group of Jewish rebels were besieged by a Roman army - visitors can climb either of two steep paths, or opt for a cable car ascent.
Petra and the South
Southern Jordan is home to Petra, that astonishing city carved from living rock by the ancient Nabataeans. There are a number of excellent hotels sited conveniently close to Petra’s entrance. Another must-see is the spectacular scenery of Wadi Rum, a cinematic combination of rugged rock features and golden sands. And Aqaba lies on Jordan’s sliver of Red Sea coast, a resort that draws sun worshippers and scuba divers from around the world.
